It's A Gamble

For decades people have been flocking to the debauchery capital of the world, the place where being drunk in public isn't just legal but expected, tucked away in a state where prostitution has a small legal foothold. We're talking about Nevada and we're talking about Sin City, people.

Las Vegas is infamous for good times, bad decisions and sealed lips upon returning home. However, in the town where inhibition is looser than the slots, there may be a tightening of the smoke free variety on the horizon. Until this past November, the state of Nevada had only one smoke free casino; Bill's Casino in Lake Tahoe. Being that Tahoe is mere steps away from the California border, it's not surprising that a smoke free casino could survive given that Californians are used to not being able to smoke just about everywhere. This past November, however, a second smoke free facility opened in Fernley, Nevada (about an hour East of Reno).

The Fernley Nugget is a small casino in a small town looking to become the new and improved Reno. While it is nowhere near the magnitude of anything seen on the Vegas strip, it does have casino moguls keeping a watchful eye. Indulgence has long been the biggest selling point for Vegas tourism but with the world becoming increasingly informed of the perils of smoking, casino owners are watching to see if a smoke free casino could actually draw people away from the glitz of the strip, to a little town called Fernley just to breathe fresh air. Since opening, the casino has met and surpassed it's income goals which is surprising in this economy thus making it an intriguing idea for casino investors.

Could we actually see one of the Vegas' major casinos go smoke free soon? It's a gamble to go against the grain when sin sells...but then again, isn't Vegas all about gambling? The fact is, people flock to Vegas to let loose, to have fun and even to get wild. Does anyone really want to contract lung cancer on vacation? You can safely bet against it.
